Leadership for Change Program

Global community projects

After the success of the 2009 Leadership for Change Program, Openaid has decided to follow up for the year of 2010. This exciting program enables 2 Melbourne University students the opportunity to participate in a 6 month internship program with Openaid. The program targets the challenges young Thai and Burmese girls face as part of their childhood and adolescence. The purpose of the program is to increase the understanding, knowledge and awareness of young Australians whilst hoping to create a link between Thailand, Burma and Australia.

LFC combines both hands on experience, valuable education and mentoring and leadership experience throughout the 6 month period, which will encourage the development of student leaders for positive change. Participants will meet weekly to discuss various issues surrounding sexual exploitation and vulnerability of young girls. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the various other Openaid projects based in and around Melbourne.

The selected candidates with participate in education modules organised to increase their knowledge of issues surrounding Thai and Burmese culture and will be given the opportunity to expand their knowledge through various meetings and exercises organised by the program manager.

Participants will be given the opportunity to travel to Thailand for one month, travel expenses paid, over the summer University holidays of 2010-2011. During their stay in Thailand, participants will work closely with the Thailand Openaid Team both in Pattaya and rural and remote villages both in the North East and the Northern parts of Thailand. This unique experience will enable the participants to gain a substantial insight into the various challenges girls face within Thailand.

The program will enable the participants to create positive change for communities and students and challenge them to grow beyond their boundaries.
