Openaid has engaged with over 200 volunteers since 2002, mostly working in Melbourne and locations in Thailand and Burma. Applications are received every week and relevant experience is highly regarded. The majority – 70 per cent – come from university and have contributed in tackling challenges and creating opportunities for the organisation.
Openaid employs locals in Thailand and Burma - local women with particular experience and skills. Volunteers from Australia, Canada, America and European countries have carried specific assignments, creating support and gaining valuable experience. Openaid is active in follow-up with volunteers, for which the key objectives are the recognition, networking and promotion of opportunities and supporting employment objectives.
The minimum commitment for volunteers is 3 months, and volunteers are required to complete a 4 stage process before starting their work. Volunteer positions are mostly non-remunerated. However, in Thailand we discuss provision of accommodation, 2-3 meals per day and local transport (where applicable) are provided throughout the placement.
Volunteers are responsible for their own airfare, health insurance, personal costs and incurred travel expenses.
Openaid prides itself on the fact that many volunteers have leveraged their volunteer experience to gain full-time employment with both international NGOs and corporate companies in Australia and overseas.
Some positions are paid but many are volunteer.
